What happened with Annette Kolb was really regrettable. Annette Kolb is the physical model for a character in Dr. Faustus, Jeanette Scheurl—even the name betrays a similarity to Annette. But it is said of this figure, who really is portrayed with love and respect, that she had ''an elegant sheep's face." This offended Annette so greatly that from then on it was all over between her and Thomas Mann.

We visited my grandmother Dohm, the advocate of women's rights, and the way my husband behaved with her wasn't very tactful at all. She asked him, "Well, Tommy, what do you want, a boy or a girl?" He said, "A boy, of course. After all, a girl is not to be taken seriously." That was bad. But in spite of it they got along very well together.
