This book opens with nearly the identical scene that Penelope Lively's The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy ends with (or nearly, excl. denouement).
And THAT nicely shows the difference between MG books of the 70s and MG books today.
We'll see if Crowe manages to give me the same sense of atmosphere. I often feel that modern books are all action and no character development, world-building/scene setting. We'll see. :)

...I don't know. I wanted to bitch and whine about how there was a lack of atmosphere, of scene building. And there is - I think The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy does it much better.
But this is DARKER. And creepier. Like Susan Cooper meets Penelope Lively, which would probably equate with perfection for me, only unfortunately Sara Crowe just isn't as skilled as either. (This is, though, only her first novel).

Heh, five years old - as near as I ever get to 'recent', with the exception of the latest release of Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series... XD
