“I came to tell you you were wrong.” He walked toward her, his eyes dark and dangerous , making her think of a predatory cat. “It wasn’t an illusion,” he said. “It’s real. As real as anything I’ve ever experienced. I love you, Hannah , and those feelings aren’t going to go away today or tomorrow or anytime soon.” She smiled. “I know.”

He slipped his sniper’s rifle from his back, fitting it with a night vision scope and setting it on its tripod. He peered through the scope, his entire world suddenly standing on end as the people on the rooftop came into focus. There was no denying what he was seeing, no way to make sense of the horror in front of him. He felt physically sick with fear. “Two men with guns. Three hostages. Brady, Hannah, and Cowboy.

On TV they called her your wife.” “The reporter just assumed and we didn’t correct him. I was too busy begging her to come with me even though I’d kidnapped her and Brady at gunpoint.” “Do you care about her?” “F**k.” He laughed without humor. “Ask me what you want to know, Leo.” “Did you sleep with her?” “Yes.” “Do you love her?” “It’s only been a couple of days.” “I’ve seen it happen faster than that.”

The wine had made him relax, even made him think it was possible she would come to him tonight, and he hoped more than he ought to hope he was right. When she entered the room, she met his stare. “I wasn’t sure you’d come back,” he said, his voice low and gravelly. “I wasn’t sure I should. But I wanted to.” He moved to her, every step a tactical decision in a game he wanted desperately to win.

“Be careful,” Brady parroted, giving Noah a big hug. When Noah extricated himself, he unzipped his go bag and withdrew several items, tucking them into the pockets of his pants before he turned to Hannah. “Whatever happens, stay in this room. If I don’t come back within an hour, use the Internet to contact anyone you can and let the authorities know you need help. Under no circumstances should you come out alone.”

They stood quietly her thoughts wandering to last night. She would've slept with him. Just like that, mere hours after he pointed a gun at her, she would've climbed into his bed like there was nothing to it but a little no-holds-barred lust. What the hell was wrong with her? “Hannah, about last night…” She was embarrassed and more than a little disgusted with herself, and her cheeks heated. “It was a mistake. I know.

She prayed Brady wouldn’t be injured as they fought against the wind, barely inching toward the condo doors. It was Noah who was pulling her, Noah who was taking care of them both. The man had been shot today— for goodness sake— but still he was the strong one leading her tiny family. Something blunt and heavy knocked her in the head. She cried out. “Are you okay?” asked Noah. The pain was sharp and throbbing. “Yes.

He was struck by the realization that none of this was random. There was a reason he’d ended up in Hannah Fielding’s apartment, one that defied coincidence or simple happenstance. Something had brought her into that bodega at just the right moment for him to find her. He’d come to the island desperate for answers, ready to face the harrowing storm outside.

had any sense, he’d be anywhere but Hilton Head Beach, South Carolina, dead center in the eye of the storm. Sense is over-fucking-rated. He hadn’t had any good sense in weeks, might never have it again. Funny how that worked when your world came crashing down around you, bringing you to your knees with a guttural cry. The things that used to mean everything became transparent wisps of nothing.
