Although the difference in the quality of the writing between the two authors in the first book was noticeable (the Wild Cards guy is clearly better, but the other guy must be the concept guy, given the greater ambition of his chapters), I did appreciate the contrast between the idealistic captain named Jim and the grizzled noir cop, who were otherwise far too wooden characters to stand on their own.
