It kills me that I can't jump on Josh Lanyon's new releases. Her Patreon serial Hide and Seek is only in print & I've never had a good experience w/those 9x6 self-pub/POD books, much less @ $20. That's $3 more than I've ever paid for paperback. Then she's releasing #7 of Secrets & Scrabble before #6. I had assumed (hoped) that personal developments progressed in each book so order would matter; I'm going to wait.

Have you seen her most recent blog post? She confirms there's relationship development in book 6 that you miss if you read book 7 first. 😐

I hadn’t seen that but there really should be, right? I guess she didn’t want to lose the pre-orders on #7 if she postponed it so you could get it & just wait to read. But then she’ll lose the buzz of reviews etc. It’s an odd situation.
The preorders are exactly the reason she gave. It is indeed an odd situation. In fact I'm inclined to call it deranged. 🤷🏻♂️
I thought the blog post said the relationship development happened in book 7, so you wouldn't miss it by skipping book 6, which is basically her admitting that book 6 is pointless since who reads any of her books for the mysteries alone? Either way, it's not the soundest decision to make to instill confidence in newer readers. (Those last couple of blog posts were basically word salad, so confusion was inevitable.)

At one point she also said it would potentially be a problem (for those who *do* mind that sort of thing haha), for only the first thousand or so readers, because once book 6 is belatedly released, future readers will be able to read the series in the correct order. So basically — and these are my words now, not hers — only her most devoted fans will be inconvenienced and have the overall story arc messed up. 😑
