The boards of the porch were splintery and warped. Shutters which might once have been green leaned askew beside the glassless windows; ancient curtains still hung in some of these, dangling like strips of dead skin.”

I actually loved that Jake interlude! I thought King was very good at showing the duality of the world for Jake at this time. I first read it as a teen, and Jake’s divided memories stuck in my mind the most.
