In 2003, there was a heated debate whether the tap water in New York violated kosher dietary law. Copepods are microscopic crustaceans (distant cousins to lobsters) found in water all over the world & are harmless. However their presence in NY tap water became a controversy because shellfish consumption is a biblical prohibition violation. (Part 2 in comments)

Necrophilia is still legal in a few states. It was legal in Wisconsin up until 2006, when 2 brothers & their friend got caught heading into a cemetery with condoms at night. After they admitted to their attempt, the state made it illegal but the crime was publicized enough that it was taken to the Supreme Court. (Part 2 in comments)

Well respected doctors in the 1900’s cautioned patients that a menstruating woman nearby could “spoil a ham.”

That is all.

In 2003, one group of volunteers was assigned mundane reading material & the other group to watch 1974's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in an experiment to test the body's immune response to fictitious stressful events. Heart rate & blood pressure raised 20% in the TCM group while the control group has no change. (Comments for part 2)

There's a philia called "apotemnophelia" where people wish they were amputees. They have websites where you can link up with kindred spirits sharing the same interests that also share helpful tips on how to have an industrial accident if you can't convince your doctor to amputate your limbs for no reason. 😐 (these desires are symptoms of BIID, Body integrity identity disorder)

Arachnophobia is a Western European trait. Spiders are eaten as a delicacy in the Caribbean & spiders are released into the newlywed’s bed for good luck in Egypt. Spiders somehow became connected to disease & death during the the Middle Ages when epidemics/plagues were sweeping Europe. People were dropping dead left & right so anything painful (spider bite) was considered a plausible scapegoat. (Part 2 in comments)

“Nose-picking while behind the wheel has been deemed more dangerous than using your cellphone, & in Canada a new law could impose an $850 fine for a moving nose-picking violation-$350 more than the the fine for a cell phone driving violation.”

“In medieval palaces, urinating and defecating against the dining room wall during dinner was the norm. In fact, in the palaces of yore, rather than having the servants clean up the mess, after it piled too high people just moved.“

Only a few pages in and I’ve learned about bull penis soup from China, Chicha (Equadorian liquor made from fermented corn meal/saliva, Hákarl (decomposing shark from Greenland), & Cazu Marzu (rotting maggot infested cheese from Sardinia.)

P.s. you can choose to eat the cheese w/ or w/o maggots. If you choose to eat it WITH maggots, cover it before biting because they can jump up to 6 inches when disturbed.

Ahhh I’ve been waiting to read this one for so long! 🖤 For those that don’t know, I’m a psychology student going for my PsyD. Already thinking about what my dissertation will be about & the science/ evolutionary psychology behind disgust/repulsion has always fascinated me. Especially b/c I’m disgusted by like 746364 things a day. 😖

Phrique They eventually said that it would be permitted because the crustaceans could not be seen by the naked eye & the Talmud was written before the invention of microscopes.
