He wanted to tell her to hold off, to not make any decisions about digging deeper roots in Gold Creek until he could figure things out – whether he was leaving and whether she’d come with him. But seeing the spark in her eye when she talked about it, the smile that lit up her expression, how could he even consider holding her back?

“I swear I’ve seen more sophisticated techniques on the walls of my grandkids’ elementary school.” Emily flinched at his harsh appraisal of her work. “Keep your voice down, Henry,” the woman at his side warned as she latched onto his arm. “Nonsense,” the man insisted, pulling away from her grasp. “She invited people to look at her work. I’ve been in the art business for thirty years. I know talent when I see it.”

He again brushed his lips against hers. “Remember when I told you earlier that I keep that fishing fly with me because it’s my good luck charm?” She nodded and threaded her arms around his neck, tangling her fingers in his hair. “It was a lie. You are my good luck charm. That fly just reminds me of spending the day with you and having you all to myself.”

Emily described her mission to go to Ben’s place and test the romantic spark theory, only to be derailed by the unexpected run-in outside of his apartment – including Ashley’s smug attitude about successfully sinking her claws back into Ben, like he was some big game trophy. “No way. Ben’s too smart for that,” Cassie insisted.

“Still think you can wiggle your way into that man’s heart through his sweet tooth?” She clicked her tongue in disapproval. “You might ply him with sweet somethings, but it’s only in my ear that he whispers all his sweet nothings.” “What? – No.” Emily couldn’t camouflage the hot flush of embarrassment that crept up her neck.

“Oh Ben, it’s just you.” She felt relieved to see her neighbor. “Gee, great to see you too,” Ben laughed. “Sorry. I didn’t mean it to come out that way. I’m just not ready to handle customers. So what I really meant to say is that I’m very happy that it’s you.” She clapped a hand against his shoulder as she walked past him. “Nice recovery,” Ben teased.
