Kahlil wanted to be able to leave without a backward glance, but dread welled up in him and he knew that he'd left Jath'ibaye once before, in another life, and they had not seen each other again. They couldn't part like that again.

He'd wondered why Parfir had allowed him to cross through the broken Great Gate and return to Basawar. The answer now coalesced within him: he still had a purpose.

Fikiri stumbled back a step, his eyes wide.
"You can't be..." Fikiri gaped.
"But I am." Kahlil punched his knife into Fikiri's chest... Pain rocked up Kahlil's arm as Fikiri's armor held against his assault. After a second fast blow, Kahlil felt something crack. The wailing screech of some dying creature rose from Fikiri's chest and he suddenly went pale.

Every chapter wrecks me a little more. And I keep coming back.

"You are carrying two lives. One belongs to this history and one does not. You may not want to know the life you lived here. You may not want to be the man you were, but let me tell you that there is danger in not knowing. There are mistakes that you could avoid if you would just allow yourself to know." T^T

The end of The Holy Road arc wrecked me so exquisitely I had to recover for two months before diving back in. Now I'm ready to be hurt again and this first chapter of The Haunted North already has my heart bursting all over again.
