Little concerned about how often I've thought, "Oh, look! This author has a new book!" and discovered I'd already marked it to-read and forgotten about it.

Don't be concerned! It's totally normal!

And not in the sense of "we are all crazy together," just in the sense of "there are a lot of authors, and a lot of books, and I'd only worry if you forgot about a Sanderson book, in your case." :DEdited to close quotes. Blehhh.
I tend to be completely oblivious to books coming out that I haven't pre-ordered. Like, sure, that sounded great when I heard about it six months ago, but remembering when it's coming out? No.
I have a system worked out so I check my not-yet-released shelf every Tuesday, so I will know when they actually come out. Remembering before then? Apparently not!

Wellll, I used to go through a little of my "this-looks-interesting" shelf every Sunday, but I never quite made that a proper habit.BUT HERE'S THE MAGIC:
I use the Daily Links Chrome extension ("Morning Coffee" on Firefox), which lets me load a bunch of pre-determined tabs all at once. So it's stuff like here and Facebook that I (in theory) read every day. But you can do different tabs on different days, so on Tuesdays I have one that loads my not-yet-released shelf, sorted by release day.
It's worked out really well for me!
(And me toooo re: the updates! Only they need to magically know which authors I now hate and don't want to see books for, ha!)
