i can already feel that this will become one if my all time faves
this book such a wondrous mix of historical fiction, fantasy, and non fiction. never in my days did i think i'd thoroughly enjoy a book with footnotes
the era-accurate racism really packs an extra punch since i'm also chinese and man it just hurts so bad

r.f. kuang really does have an amazing talent of writing anecdotal passages that convince you yes there is still hope!! and then crushing you so abruptly in the next paragraph . and all you can do is sit in horror
