Chloe Howard started her novel with a flashback of the main character in her middle school cafeteria. She successfully engages the reader because this scene is completely out of the ordinary as the girl is being forced to take her shoe off in the middle of lunch to show a ton of girls how she has no toenails.

Chloe uses her experiences and interactions to show and explain important life lessons in her writing. Chloe was greatly impacted by the time she spent in India and amazed by the love and culture in the run-down hospitals. Chloe asked what keeps the doctors going on busy days and one responded, "'I love these kids. I do it for them. And when you love what you do and who you do it for, it's not work'" (Howard 166).

Letting her emotions free Chloe and her mom "were jumping and waving [their} arms and screaming with that mid-afternoon sun coming through the dusty blinds " (Howard 75). This is a good use of specific and sensory detail to show what the girls looked like in the room and to understand how they felt.
