On Hopper's Early Sunday Morning, 1930
"Most of us would admit feeling some ambivalence abut Sunday. When the mail stops and the telephone rings less often, there is a promise of freedom and loneliness. It was also the day when an angel addressed those who came in grief to the tomb of Jesus, assuring them of new beginnings. Light explains nothing about meaning, but for Hopper it was the basis of a lifetime's faith."
