Terrible chapter if you are looking for a narrative. Earliest arrivals sounds promising.

Chapter one The Peopling of Europe 700,000-40,000 years before the Present by Clive Gamble. See if this is readable.

The Introduction. I have read it a few times. Barry Cunliff is the author of this and the editor of the volume. 1994 was a long time ago but I can’t afford new books.
