The author engages the reader by saying, "that won't travel well" as one of the first sentences this quote made the reader curious about where they are traveling to. Then a quote says, "that was all Lori needed to hear" this implies Lori is going to be a sassy character and those are the characters Ishe is giving a small glimpse of the characters and how they are going to act throughout the book.

I like the way it built up from pages 1-10 because it didn't rush into the plot, but it wasn't very entertaining at first, and dumped a lot of characters in.
