The First Law re-read continues. The 1st book in this series was one of the best re-reads I've done. Was really surprised at how many cool little details I forgot and how engrossed I was in the story. Will be interested to see if this entry keeps the momentum going

I forgot Shivers even appeared in this book never mind having a fairly prominent role. Albeit the handsome, kind young warrior he appears as here is quite different than his later appearances

Logen and Ferro's romance is still pretty weird in many ways but while I wasn't a fan of it on the 1st read I'm really rooting for them this time. Abercrombie does a good job of showing 2 older, flawed characters who are haunted by their pasts but are drawn together. I'm also overall liking/sympathising with Ferro a lot more than I did 1st time around

I like how with each of Bayaz "siblings" the crew meets on their journey more info about Juvens, Kanadius etc. is revealed and with each reveal Bayaz seems more and more sinister

I remembered Gloktas part in this as being my least favourite in this book and essentially a rip-off of Tyrion in GoT season 2/Clash of Kings (probably influenced by the fact that I'd just watched that season shortly before my initial read of this). While strong "similarities" remain I'm still really enjoying the intrigue and dark humour of Gloktas sections here

As much as I'm enjoying this re-read the deeper i get into it the more I'm reminded of how bitterly disappointing the ending was for some of my favourite characters. Ah well I guess it's not always about the destination, sometimes it's the journey that matters more

I'm finding the history of Juvens, Kanadius, Bayaz and the Magi way more interesting and mysterious than I remembered. Which makes it a real shame that was all kind of dropped in the 1st Law stuff that followed this trilogy

Coming back to Abercrombie after reading a few other fantasy authors really does make you realize his writing/dialogue/characterization is on another level
