The first chapter presents many themes and ideals, presenting flapper girls as the epitome of perfection as well as presenting the antagonist of the book, Tom Buchanan, as a white supremacist; his extremism only peculiar as it was a common ideal at the time. Moreover the book presents a peculiar attraction between Tom and his cousin however due to the age of the book it may be odd due to the change in ideals.
