Ilse My, my, what a great prospect - I hope you will enjoy the preparation as much as the visit, Mark! You remind me there must be a copy of a book on the Prado somewhere in the house :). I'd love to know which masterpieces in your book so far particularly spoke to you.

As you'd know IIse - it's the preparation that's half the fun. It's one reason, I became obsessed (and still am) about Ancient Rome before going to Italy, a decision made when I was diagnosed - gotta get out and about. Travelling is not only fun, it's interesting and a great way to learn hey?

This book, is big and bold, lots of great colour pics and stories of artists and the times. The first artist I went for was Goya, I really like his later/darker work - like "Two Old Men Eating" - and others, I also made a beeline for Rubens - from your part of the world - some great works of his in this book, and the Prado obviously, I'm learning more about him now. Then there's Valazquez - an artist I know little about, but he is well represented at the Prado - some of his portraits are wonderful.

But so far, the painting that smacked me between the eyes was this one:

-Countess of Vilches 1853, by Frederico De Madrazo (1815-1894)

Doesn't she have a delighful face? This painting, for me, really encapsulates her personality (I hope), I bet you the Countess was nice, and had a great sense of humour, was great company, a trifle naughty and not stuffy at all.

Love it IIse - thanks for checking in :))

Meghhnaa (On a Review-Writing Break!) So, your holidays and books go hand-in-hand, and work in tandem! I assume, you are an organised chap, who loves devouring life in totality! :)
Happy vacationing, Mark :)
