DTH creation and philosophy was born out of major world events. For Mitchell it was the assassination of Martin Luther King that was an epiphany that he should give back to the community of his birth, and he left his project in Brazil creating a national ballet company. For Shook, he developed the philosophy that dance “ should have a spiritual, emotional, social significance after Robert Kennedy’s assassination

Mitchell quote: “ (DTH) was called Dance Theatre of Harlem not Ballet Theatre of Harlem.” Author noted that teaching allowed dancers to use classical foundation in ways that were radically creative. DTH style of tipping, for instance, refers to the immediately recognizable sultry, poised walk.

Association with Maynor ended in 1969 due to tension between the 2 for artistic direction and style of management. Mitchell formed his own nonprofit with a board of directors that included the likes of Balanchine and Cecile Tyson. DTH was officially born in space provided by Glen Tetley.

Mitchell and Shook crossed paths at the Katherine Dunham school of Dance. Shook had decided ballet was not challenging for the males early in his career with Ballet Russe and a short stint with Balanchine’s New City Ballet, “there was nothing for men to get there teeth into”. So he became a teacher and choreographer I interested in driving the evolution of dance in technique and theory.

Both Mitchell(b 1934) and Shook(b 1920) came from humble beginnings in Harlem and a rural farm in Washington state. Opportunity found them in these unlikely places as teenagers. A teacher encouraged Mitchell to audition to the Franklin Keller School of Performing Arts. A lucky audition was won by Shook to the Cornish School of Allied Arts for the summer due to his thespian talents and encouraged to learn dance.
