'Today... people like to overlook the suffering which is part of every great passion. ... They anaesthetize pain and rob themselves of feeling. Like without passion is a poor thing.' (32)

Reminds me of one of McGowan's favorite passages from Hegel's Logic “Der Schmerz ist daher das Vorrecht lebendiger Naturen. . . '

Passion/pain is our privilege as living beings. We can love because we can suffer.

Wynne Belk This looks interesting. Is the passion/pain concept a big theme in this work? I’m trying to find books to read in the issue of pain and how it confuses meaning. Would you recommend?

Edward Backman I would recommend. Chapter II contains very clearly written (still heartwrenching tho) defences of his basic ideas: the the abandonment of Jesus by God, His godforsakenness, God's possibility, love as suffering in solidarity, etc.

All of these are in the Crucified God but here he is being more pastoral and less systematic I think.
