I've probably been looking for the "dog" in all the wrong, literal places. I ran across a quote from Friederich Grimm, a Parisian editor and impecunious noble, who pronounced on the sad state of Rousseau's temperament: "Where can he end his days in peace? It seems plain that he takes with him a companion who will not suffer him to rest in peace". (p.215) Perhaps an "aha" reader moment.
