Etienne Lola Ridge - excerpt from “ The Ghetto” - amazing imagery and atmosphere -flows from scene to scene beautifully.

Em Briefly looked it up -- one of the first things on Google was an academic article titled "Ethnicity, Class and Gender in Lola Ridge's 'The Ghetto,'" so it has to be good. A lot of people are calling her "avant garde," is that what you're getting?

Etienne I can see her being called that. This poem seemed much more modern to me than when it was written. I was struck by how she put me in time and place to somewhere I’ve never been. But it wasn’t just description, it was feel too. And the language is such that it’s just begging to be read out loud - performed.

Em Love spoken word poetry, slam poetry -- it sounds sensational. And powerful to pull you in so thoroughly. 🥰

Etienne I was wondering if you knew about slam poetry. I've been checking some on YouTube. Adds another dimension.
