Wonderful section on hard bop pianists Sonny Clark, Elmo Hope, and Wynton Kelly. Love Clark and Kelly but wasn’t familiar with Hope. This book is going to send me down so many rabbit holes for new albums and artists.

You can usually tell pretty quickly whether or not the author actually is a fan of the subject they’re writing about or if it’s just a “job”. The fandom in this one is wonderfully infectious.

My favorite period in jazz is probably '65 to '74, but I do like the periods prior to, especially starting with Miles Davis's 'Birth of the Cool'.

Thanks Josh. I’m probably a late 40’s to late 60’s fan. Can’t go wrong with Birth of the Cool. For me, Miles’s “Someday my prince will come” album is my my favorite. Along with Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” and Hank Mobley’s “Soul Station”. But so much great music in those years, almost impossible to choose.
