I've been really enjoying the way Samuel writes about each of the protagonists' relationship to faith & God!

'Sometimes, with the indigo summer sky stretched overhead, she wld listen to Jordan High laughing & think of God: God in a good mood, like he never ws in church; God like he must hv been when he made the sky. It was a luxurious sound, rich with knowledge & awareness & love. She’d close her eyes & let that laughing flow through her, thinking of God w a black face & strong black hands' I'm not religious but I love this
