One shocking part was when Rowan decapitated Goddard. Goddard's gang went to glean the Tonists. He tries to have Rowan kill one, but Rowan "didn't want to hear anything from him anymore, so he stepped back, withdrew his sword from Goddard's gut, and swung it in a broad, sweeping ark that took off Goddard's head in a single blow."(392). Rowan was conflicted, but nobody expected him to chop Goddard's head off.

One key part was when Xenocrates jumped into the pool. Xenocrates is unwillingly at Goddard's party when Goddard threatens to kill Esme unless Xenocrates does what he says. Xenocrates is unwilling, but eventually "he stood up and threw himself into the pool, gold adornments and all." (308). This shows Goddard's power over Xenocrates. If he can manipulate the High Blade, he truly has a lot of influence.

One shocking part was when Rowan snapped Citra's neck. When fighting, each tried to rig it in the other's favor and were aware of this. After they briefly clashed, Rowan flung her into the air. "Her neck broke with a loud and horrible snap, and darkness came over Citra like a landslide." (291). It was surprising because Rowan tried his hardest out of the blue. However, we later find out he purposely got disqualified.

One important part was when Rowan smiled after killing people. Scythe Goddard put people on the lawn for Rowan to kill. This was difficult and traumatizing for him so he had to try to compromise his conscience. Yet, after he killed them, "Rowan found himself smiling. Something had torn loose inside of him." (252). This shows how he can't permanently compromise his conscience to kill easier, it will come back to him.

One impactful part was when Rowan kept trying to help Bradford before gleaning. Rowan had to pick a heroic person to be gleaned, and felt bad for Bradford after choosing him. In his final moments, Rowan told him "You lived a good life. Scythe Faraday is here to complete it for you" (93). This proves that Rowan cares about each individual and wants them to feel content. This will be important for his character later.

A sad part was how Rowan's family didn't care for him and wanted him to prioritize the family over his well being although he's not well liked by them. "He was loved, but only as one among a group of other beloved things. If his sacrifice could save the rest, the greater familial good would be served." His family should be supportive of his decision, but instead expects him to sacrifice for the family's good.
