Oh dear, this simply isn't good. I love McCarthy as much as anyone but this is a serious misfire. The man hasn't forgotten how to write, but he has forgotten whether something contributes to the story or not, and whether anyone is likely to be interested in a lot of tedious technical details. Very little narrative momentum whatsoever.
