Wolfe in this is as strong at writing characters as in any of his works, but somehow it feels like a detriment because there's too much hidden in the narrative. There's a lock and key approach as in many of his other books, but finding the key is too difficult compared to his best. The character being who he is it also lacks the poetic depth of many of his best. Wolfe is consistent to character writing to a fault.
