“The Protestant Church;” just who is the author referring to?

The author states that the Protestant Churches (denominations unnamed) openly colluded with Hitler in 1933. But other historians have stated that the Lutheran Church refused to come to an accomodation with Hitler in the run up to WWII, and in fact openly defied him. Further it was stated in these other history books I have reviewed, that the Lutheran Church was too powerful and Hitler left them alone.
