I was in the library trying to grab the Diamond and Heart Sutras, but my hold didn't show up for another day. Grabbed this instead, which is as critical-historical as you can possibly get (but apologetic about it). Not much direct quotation from source texts, more big-picture paraph. But as broad background to situate primary texts, exactly the level of detail I wanted, and some very pithy bits too.
