I like the Portuguese words in the text: madrugada, cigana, bruxo, cidreira (lemon balm), queridinha etc The Běbada is my fav chapter: "..people hungry for anything promising escape from lives wedged between the evanescence of their dreams and the reality of their meagreness."
Not sure about early Saramago but pretty fine writing to me.
