When this voice starts to interfere with your happiness, it becomes what psychologist Eugene Sagan calls a pathological critic. This pathological critic can take on a life of its own during your twenties because the loss of college structure combined with the instability of the working world can make you feel uncertain and helpless in your new environment.

The end of this chapter was really interesting.
It talked about how in college we could thrive under a deadline and procrastinate on everything because we still got feedback via grades, the work just needed to get done… where as in the working world you can’t procrastinate & most people don’t get consistent feedback other than a paycheck.
Hit a little closer to home than I thought it would.

This book finally put words to a piece of advice I wish someone (prof, parent, friend, therapist, anyone) would have told me years ago: “Always remember that you have the power within to change the path you want to take.”

Self-efficacy: confidence u have in ur capacity to be effective & successful in the various areas of ur life
Self-respect: seeing urself as worthy of living life for ur own sake, & feeling that u have the right to be successful & happy
Self esteem = self-efficacy + self-respect
It takes strength, courage, & self-respect to honor ur desires…when everyone else is telling u to be “practical” & stop dreaming.

Salazar starts by explaining differences in the lives of 20 yr olds from 20-40 years ago to 20 yr olds now.
I didn’t realize how accurate calling us “the ever changing generation” was until he went into detail.
“Our 20s don’t have to be all about stress, frustration, and disappointment. Rather, this time to be a great opportunity for self discovery, self-fulfillment, and self actualization.”

To stop the pathological critic, it is essential to always stay aware of the fact that how you feel about yourself is ultimately dependent on how you filter our and interpret your experiences.
