Wondering just a little if the protagonists might both have cognitive issues? It would make sense. Bellamy plays football, which is a high-TBI sport. Being unhoused plus his early childhood neglect and food insecurity could put Finn at risk for cognitive delays. I think I'm going to read it that way, to see if it feels better than reading it as though a football Daddy with big money cures all trauma for Finn.
