One shocking part was when Gert passed away. Once Amy, Nox, and Gert finally defeated The Lion, his magic he used on Gert was too strong for her, causing her death. "I had been wondering that, too, but when I saw that Gert was still on the ground, everything else went out of my head." (242). This was shocking because we were recently introduced to Gert, and I didn't expect the author to kill her off that quickly.

A disgusting part was when Dorothy made Jellia kill a rat. When Amy and Jellia are in Dorothy's room, she finds a rat. She makes Jellia kill it & put it in her pocket. "Jellia clenched tighter. A trickle of blood spilled out from between her fingers, but she placed her other hand underneath in time to catch it before it hit the carpet," (326). This was vile because the author tells the rat's death in shocking detail.

One shocking part was when Amy first uses magic. When Amy and Nox are dancing, Nox calls Amy "Salvation Amy", a mean nickname she used to be called, and she gets angry and fire shoots out of her hands. "My hands got hotter-light seemed to shoot from them. Not the gentle glow I'd seen from Gert. A searching red glow. Like darts of fire." (189). This proves that Amy using magic was shocking because it wasn't expected.

One trait to describe Amy is quick-witted. When Madison Pendleton, a girl who bullies Amy, tries to pick on her, Amy replies quickly with insults worse than hers. "I knew it was mean, but it flew out of my mouth before I had a chance to even think about it. 'Maybe he just wanted to talk to someone his own size." (7). This shows that Amy is quick-witted because she created a response to Madison's bullying in no time.
