No matter how bad I feel, Evangeline Anderson is always safe to read.
The best part is always when she invents a new planet with weird pets, living fashion and awesome foodstuffs. Can't get enough of that even if the writing isn't great.

At the same time of course there are too many examples even today that do show that regimes that call themselves a "people's republic" are often just as oppressive, constricting and evil as the propaganda says they are. A more balanced approach would have been to show some kind people in the "evil" country and some really corrupt schemers in the "good" country. But black and white is so much easier.
