I’m going to go ahead and throw in the towel on this one as a DNF. It’s fantastical as Barnhill’s earlier work has been. And I love bits of the writing style. (“Listen.”) But it also feels preachy, like there’s some underlying axe to grind or lesson to get across. That just kills the book for me—whether I agree with the lesson or not.
