So far, it's mainly about Europeans making me wonder who the 'sea people' refers too. It also doesn't approach the book at all with an explicit recognition of the impacts of empire and the denial of the histories this book is trying to tell. The prologue for example exoticises Polynesia and, essentially, fetishises the author's husband's ancestry.

'Part II: Connecting the Dots' focuses much more on Tupaia, his map, and the world view of contemporary Polynesians. Yet, this is still very much from the perspective of James Cook and his mapping of the Pacific. She doesn't critically engage with the accounts given so the narratives are hard to trust and while lamenting lost information from Tupaia, she treats the loss of Polynesian knowledge as inevitable.
