“You know my mother. She’ll do the whole welcome the hero home, with a party and every blessed member of the extended family, and probably most of the neighborhood. I couldn’t face it.” It was the truth. The very idea of coming up against all that with what he’d been dealing with overseas made his head ache. Hell, last week he’d been clearing out a terrorist cell. He wasn’t up to playing that kind of mental whiplash.

“Oh my God, I missed you so much.” “I missed you, too.” She pulled back far enough to see his face. “How are you here? You said you couldn’t come home for Christmas.” He let her slide down his body, but his hands gripped her hips, kneading a little, as if he couldn’t quite let her go either. “I pulled a few strings. I had to give you your Christmas present in person.” “I don’t want anything but you.”

I can’t even fathom how hard you worked to get where you are. One of the elite. But you can only do that effectively if you can maintain your edge. Psychologically, that’s got to wear on a person. That doesn’t make you weak or a failure. It makes you human.” Somehow, staring into her big, blue eyes, that didn’t seem like such a bad thing. How was it that this woman understood him so well after so little time?

Hannah hadn’t wanted to admit how foolish she’d been in allowing herself to get attached to Ryan in the first place. Oh, who was she kidding? She’d fallen in love with the guy she’d believed him to be. And he hadn’t wanted that. He’d been clear from the beginning what this was, what it could be. She’d just believed he’d been changing his mind and coming around to her way of thinking. Her mistake.

How’d you end up that way? All cheerful Zen or whatever?” “I focus on the now because I’m grateful to have the now, when things could’ve gone a whole other way in the accident. And I take pleasure and joy in the life I have, not the life I thought I’d have, or that might be just around the corner. Which isn’t to say I don’t plan for the future, but that’s a lot hazier to me than it used to be.”

“How do you feel about traditions?” he asked. “Generally a big fan. Why?” “Because we’re standing under mistletoe.” She glanced up and spotted the kissing ball dangling over their heads. “It’s bad luck not to kiss under mistletoe.” “Can’t be having any of that,” he murmured, his eyes full of affection and heat. “Definitely not,” she agreed, already breathless. His mouth brushed over hers, and she sighed.

She definitely hadn’t imagined it this time. They’d been having a Moment, damn it. Ryan had been seconds away from kissing her, and then—Perseus Interruptus. Fifteen months since she’d been kissed. Longer than that since anyone had tempted her for more. She’d been fine with that until him. And now she was supposed to work alongside him decorating this house.

Hannah was a walking, talking holiday card. It should’ve been annoying. Nobody could be that happy and have even a toe still dipped in the real world. But she’d made Percy smile. Hell, she’d made him smile, even if it was at his own expense because Percy was playing matchmaker. Just what would his Elf Girl say if she knew about that? And why the hell was he thinking of her as his? They were nothing to each other.

He blinked at her, expression unchanging, still standing there with a totally unnatural stillness that said he’d been a soldier. Hannah pointed at him and mimed drinking from a cup of coffee. She hoped he took it for the invitation it was and not as some kind of pity. Amping up the smile, she waited. She’d yet to meet the man who could turn away from that smile.
