Surprisingly boring. Lacks tension and conflict. Sure, the dad and fiancée are recently missing. Sure, the mom disappeared suspiciously years ago, but we all what’s going on at a basic level. We know E is half Octopus, as is his now ex-fiancée, and since E and D are already a devoted couple at half way into the story, what is there left for me to sweat about? How they’ll traverse the two worlds? Don’t care.

Megan [At The Cottage] I loved this book, actually all 3 in the series but this one was my favorite. I loved E & D as a couple so I didn’t mind it being just the two of them and already devoted. More does happen though and not just about the two worlds although they do go to that island, reunite with some people, kill others 😂 I loved the sex scenes between E & D. Book 2 actually has more conflict, separation and overall angst which is why I liked book 1 better. Sorry this didn’t work for you though!

Thanks for sharing, Megan. Good to know about the conflict change later in series—I might try book 2 then. It never ceases to fascinate me to discover the subjective whys: why the same story will draw one person in and push another away.

Megan [At The Cottage] Well book 2 is still the same couple. It turns out that the octopus half of their dna is not compatible with humans for very long and part of the reason the mom left. It paralyzes their partner so if D & E want to be together long term they need a solution and that’s what book 2 is about. It fascinates me too but all I can say is I love tentacle books and got this for free during a sale, had no idea what it was about besides the tentacles so to find out it was also stepbrothers was a win. I think it also matters when you read certain books and I had read a lot of crap books prior to this and somehow it just hooked me. It was rather weird too because I don’t usually like books set in the 1800’s. Book 3 is a novella and about the ex fiancé and the trans guy on D’s ship. Joey? I think.
