It's quite strange (at least for me) that someone would tell a long story of her life to a friend whom she met again after so many years. A story that long would require a few chat-over-coffee sessions, I guess.
However, this writing technique has also been used by a classic author, Arthur Conan Doyle in his first Sherlock Holmes series, A Study in Scarlet. That book isn't my favourite Sherlock novel, though.
