This book is sometimes marketed as a gothic, no doubt because of Phyllis Whitney's later success in that genre, not to mention what a smash hit gothics were in her heyday. But unless something major changes, this is definitely just a good old fashioned murder mystery. It takes place in a 1940s department store which is fun. This cover design is simple, but I love it! Those nails! That stone! That red font!

I have some theories on who did it. I do wonder why *mild early plot spoilers* Bill and Linell are trying so hard to hide that they found the body first? We know Linell is innocent so I don't know why she's so afraid to say anything. She didn't do anything wrong. Now she looks guilty as hell. I kinda think Bill did it although I think it's more likely he's just stupid. The cops are too honestly
