Just finished a really good chapter on old-growth forests, and Franz, who was trying to restore one. Braiding sweet grass may be my favorite part of the book. It feels like now I have a deep connection to sweetgrass since I’ve seen it be planted and grown and picked. This part of the book describes its true essence, how it can be used to better society, and how we can help it do that

Co op really took a lot out of me lol. Burning sweet grass is another great section. Perfect wrap up to the book with a blurb on how sweetgrass is ceremonially burned. The superfund chapter was a wonderful read as it connects to things that I’ll be doing with my life. Restoring superfund sites is not just about meeting a quota but actually restoring the earth to what it used to be. Great little section.

Picking sweetgrass was a very good section, spoke on honorable harvests and taking what you need. It’s a really good read itself on how to take more and respect our earth. The things that we buy can feel so inanimate that we forget the human, animal, and earth life that goes into them. Really made the think about the things I buy and use differently

I really liked the growing sweetgrass portion. There was a big focus on being a mother, the responsibilities she feels come with that, and the feeling of watching your kids grow up. The pond story got to me specifically. There was no reason for her to devote that time and energy to a pond that would take an extremely long time, if ever, to de-eutrophy. I also like how science can be learned through her stories

Really good so far, I like how it ties together science with stories. The strawberry chapter was a bit hard to grasp on my end especially the gift giving. I feel like I don’t give a gift so it can be reciprocated to me but I do agree that good actions get you good karma. Either way a really interesting read
