there are no chapters (just one continuous chapter), no quotation marks or a way to mark speech, no paragraphs, no character names. Literally like someone typed this book out and forgot to format it.
I should be on my way to the asylum by now but tell me why I'm flying through this, it's so easy to read considering.

Goodness me, Saramago! You're either very brave or a sucker for punishment. :D Man took me 3 years to get into. Three! And I didn't give up just because I'm a mule, but I suffered with every blasted sentence in his books.
Marquise, I AM SO GLAD someone understands my struggle, because this book is filled to the brim with praising reviews and I just do not see what is so special , even tho I get what it's trying to convey. But maybe it gets more interesting later on, it keeps dragging so it feels like I'll never find out😂

I read him (I haven't reviewed all books of his I read, by the way) precisely because of that pressure to read "highbrow" literature I felt at the time. It wasn't worth it, honestly. It won't improve, but you at least can say you gave him a fair chance and be at peace. :)
