Hugo balked at the scene on the beach with the rats. Apparently that's what scared him off when Joe tried to read it to both kids a couple years ago (and shifted to reading the whole series, just to E). I will finish it on my own, as it's one of her school book club's reads, but have to put it aside for now. H and I are onto The Investigators graphic novel series.
