Paul Baumer and his company are shelled by the French and are forced to hide in a graveyard. Graves are being blown apart and Paul watches as some of his fellow men are killed. It is later revealed that 3/4 of Paul's company was killed in the attack, and this mess Paul up psychologically.

I enjoy how incredible Erich Maria Remarque is at harnessing hatred for certain characters. I can feel like best friends with Paul, and a second later I hate him more than anyone else.
