The fact it is a huge tome to dive into is a huge plus for me as long as the writing is good.

I like to dive into a huge tome from time time, too. I enjoyed this one overall, but it is quite polemical in places and Herbert had some idiosyncratic ideas about history. There's also some terrible violence towards the end of the novel that I found quite repugnant. Despite its flaws, I was never bored by the novel and I'm glad I read it.
