This wasn't my first time reading "Thin Cold Hands" but I can't remember the anthology this 21st century Changeling story came from. Warning: This story is particularly tough.
Meanwhile, "Look Up" was a lovely take on the growing genre of Folk Horror. Fan's of Adam Nevill's The Ritual (film or novel) will find a lot to love in this tale about the relatives you wish you could forget.

Two final gems round out the collection as they play on time, trauma, and what we owe to our own flesh and blood. "Halloo" offers a glimpse of a daughters return to an unwelcome home and "Cuckoo" greets the parents of an unwelcome child that the earlier take in this collection. "Church in the Mountains" deserves an honorable mention for finding horror in that show you swear you saw once..

Gemma Files takes things you don't think much about such as the odd house on your block ("Come Closer"), the wiring of your home ("Bulb"), a new apartment (in both "The Puppet Motel" and "Always After Three"), or even one's own dreams ("Sleep Hygeine") and just asks two horrifying questions: Do we notice enough about the spaces we inhabit? Do the spaces we inhabit think about us?

My go-to comfort genre will always be horror anthologies or single author collections but I struggle to remember where the most impactful, thought-provoking or unsettling stories were found. In 2023, I will begin including brief summaries of the gems I find within these collections in my updates for personal reference. Should one spark your interest, be warned: I'll gladly lose sleep for a memorable story. Will you?
