OK. Halfway in, stuff is finally picking up. Xenos (of a sort) are rampaging. This reminds me of something others have complained about: the black goo. They say it doesn't act like this and I have to say... yes and no. Explanations (and slight spoilers) in comments.

I do kind of like where this is going for the most part, but I'm also a bit apprehensive. I don't really want the Engineers to be a visible part of the Aliens universe. I like them being an enigmatic, menacing ghost in the machine. I'm aware that the writers are given details of what should be in the book and general gists of where the universe is going, but still...

They're now in the Engineers' underground facility. Some interesting notions, but as a whole a lot of this just feels like a shorter story stretched very thin. This feels like it could have easily been a novella or short story as opposed to a full length novel, and delivered more of a punch. I don't necessarily fault the author for this since she likely had a ton of limitations put on her about what could be added.

So far this is OK. I know there are some out there upset with the representation in the book. I don't really see it, but I will say that there is far more representation here than you'd normally see in a book in this series. I really only have two gripes. One is that this is moving pretty slowly and the other is the audiobook narrator. I'll elaborate more in comments.

#ReadAllTheBooks A common complaint I've seen is that the black goo is creating Xenomorphs in a way that hasn't been shown thus far in the series. That's kind of a yes and no situation. Here's why:

Into Charybdis shows that Blue injected herself with the goo and it turned her into a Xenomorph, albeit one that's far different than others. She was still capable of human thought to a degree, although it was made clear that it took a lot of concentration and determination to maintain what humanity she had left.

In that same book we see people falling into the goo and Xenos forming in his body, then breaking out. I can't remember how well formed the Xenos are or what they looked like, but I seem to remember that they weren't exactly as they should be.

The Engineers also use a black goo, as seen in other works. There's mention in one of the other books (I think Into Charybdis) that strange ships have been dumping a black goo onto worlds. We were more or less left to question whether it was the Engineers, Wayland-Yutani, or another corporation testing out the goo or a new strain of it.

That brings us to this book. The ship described here is clearly an Engineers ship - or one intended to look like one. I don't know that WY or another corporation would really bother going to that sort of detail, particularly as the ship design was either never described to them or never shared with the general public. There's nothing to gain by them doing this, as there are easier ways to disguise or otherwise hide who owns a ship. Plus there's the underground door, which is resonating with the ship.

As to why the Engineers would do this, well... in the Rage War trilogy it's more or less stated that the Engineers do NOT want humanity to venture out that far into the stars. To stop this progress they laid various traps. I don't think that this trilogy is canon to this book, but the Engineers aren't fans of humanity so this is still a reasonable, rational reaction. The movies all seem to be canon to this book, so they could be destroying planets as a form of revenge for David destroying the Engineer population on one of their home planets as seen in Covenant. If the trilogy were to be canon this would still work, as the goo drop could be seen as a more drastic form of control since a prior attempt failed - humanity is still going out into the stars. Especially as humanity has managed to defend themselves better against Xenomorphs. They're still considered to be super deadly, but marines and other fighting forces are able to clear out some infestations.

Now concerning the different types/forms of Xenos, well.. all we've seen so far is the black goo that has been tinkered with my humanity and David. The Engineers made this goo, so they could have it do whatever they wanted. It's not that far fetched, to be honest.
