Oil boom, land use questions, conservation vs. exploitation

More bears. Also, "apropos of nothing" is one of my favorite phrases.

So far: bush pilots, collapsible kayaks, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, tundra, the cyclical nature of caribou and salmon populations, and the habits of bears, among other things. McPhee manages to be unbelievably engaging, informative, and occasionally very funny to boot. I'm excited to see what the next 300+ pages will bring.
