For a book written in the 1930s it was pleasantly progressive with great contrast of attitudes of the aristocracy to the working classes and had a beautiful contrast to the changing lives of the brushy people post World War One and the end of the Industrial Revolution. However, despite this I’m not sure the same can be said for attitudes towards sex.

And the couple who run have their affair then have a fake wedding for their genitals which they name Sir John and Lady Jane which was something they left out of both the BBC and Netflix adaptations. Now I don’t have much of an insight into peoples sex lives, least of all in the 1930s, but it did strike me as rather odd.
But over all I did enjoy the complex narrative and the contrast of romantic and physical love.
