So far, I'm finding this novel very uneven and undeveloped in places. The old dictum of "show, don't tell" is repeatedly violated bt too much awkward back story. I often feel as though I'm reading the first complete draft of the novel, with embarassing thin patches. Hard to believe it's written by the author of Native Speaker.
